Last Second
Think fast. Think weird.
Last Second is a party game for 2–10 people on their own phones. Everyone gets the same category and the same letter. If your answer matches anyone else's, you both score nothing.
No app. No account. Free.
How a round works
One person hosts on any device. Everyone else joins from their own phone. A game takes about 10 minutes.
-
Join with a code
The host starts a room. Everyone scans the QR code or types the 4-letter code. Nothing to download.
-
Answer before time runs out
You get a category, a starting letter and 20 seconds. Lock in one answer. Later rounds add an extra rule.
-
Only unique answers score
Said the same thing as someone else? Bonk. You both get zero. The obvious answer is usually the worst one.
Scoring
Ten rounds by default. Most points at the end wins.
A unique answer. It fits the category, follows the rules, and nobody else said it.
The bonus rule. Each round has one, like "at least 2 words". Hit it with a unique answer for an extra point.
A match, a miss or a stretch. Same answer as someone else, wrong letter, or the group flags it as not fitting.
2–10 players
Everyone picks their own character when they join. No two players can have the same one.
Full rules
What you need
- 2 to 10 people, each with a phone (or any device with a browser).
- One person to host. The host's screen shows the room code and a QR code.
- About 10 minutes for a 10-round game. Nothing to download and no accounts.
Round by round
- A 3-second countdown. The category stays hidden until it ends, so nobody gets a head start.
- The prompt appears: a category, a starting letter, sometimes an extra rule, and a bonus rule.
- Everyone types one answer before the timer runs out (20 seconds by default). Once you lock it in, you can't change it. Nobody can see anyone else's answer yet.
- The reveal. Answers are dealt out one by one. Matching answers bonk and cancel. Answers that break a rule are marked with the reason.
- 15 seconds to flag. If an answer doesn't fit the category, tap "Doesn't fit". With at least 2 flags from a majority of the other players, it's tossed.
- Scores update and the next round starts.
Scoring
| What happened | Points |
|---|---|
| Unique answer that fits the rules | +2 |
| …and it also hits the bonus rule | +1 more |
| Same answer as someone else | 0 |
| Breaks a rule, gets tossed, or no answer | 0 |
The player with the most points after the last round wins. Ties share the spot.
An example round
Something you'd never want to find in your bed. Starts with S. Bonus: 8+ letters.
- Ana: snake Bonk
- Ben: Snakes! Bonk
- Cy: scorpion +3
- Dee: bedbug Nope
Ana and Ben both said snake, so neither scores. Cy's scorpion is unique and has 8 letters, so it earns the bonus. Dee's answer doesn't start with S.
Rules get harder
The first rounds only ask for a starting letter. Middle rounds use trickier letters and categories. The last few rounds add an extra rule, like "at least 2 words", "6 letters or fewer", "ends with Y" or "no letter E".
What counts as the same answer
- Capital letters, spaces, punctuation and a leading "a", "an" or "the" are ignored.
- Plurals match: "snakes" and "snake" are the same.
- One-letter typos on longer words match: "scorpian" and "scorpion" are the same.
- Different words never match, even when they mean the same thing: "couch" and "sofa" both score.
Fair play
- The host can pause, skip a prompt or end the game.
- Any player can vote to skip a prompt. Half the room is enough.
- Report a prompt and it won't come up again in that room.

Tips to win
- Skip your first idea. Everyone else had it too.
- Go specific: "scorpion" beats "spider", "sourdough starter" beats "sandwich".
- Watch the bonus rule. One extra point a round adds up fast.
- Don't wait for the last second. A late answer scores nothing.
